Supreme court asked the centre on Wednesday 14 Dec. 2016 to make a national action plan within 4 months to control alcohol & drugs abuse for children as they are forced to be a drug peddlers once they addicted.
Acting on a petition from Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyaarthi’s child rights commitee, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, the higher court asked the centre to discover the chances of including adverse effects of drug abuse in the school curriculum & conduct a worldwide survey within 6 months to look how major the issue is.
In india, 20% addicts are under 21 as per government figures and the court statement, awareness is mandantory to save children from drug abuse.
‘This is a general dearth which the union government should redress at an initial stage,’ a bench of Chief Justice TS Thakurand Justice DY Chandrachud stated.
The centre stated a national policy to control drugs abuse was being confirmed but accepting that there was not an accurate data.
The child rights committee asked, the court to order the government to make rehabilitation centres in all district of India along with a special children wing.

Experts say friends and academic pressure are driving children to drugs but there is limited data of drug abusers. According to census of 2011, India is the home to the biggest child population in the globe y 44 crore children and out of 43 crore, twenty four are drug addicted.
A 2013 report by national commission for the protection of child rights evaluation 40-70% of India’s 18 million homeless children exposed to any form of drug addiction.
Many have started taking drugs when they were around 5 years old only.. It rated in 2011 reports that generally one out of five are addicted either by Alcohol or drugs below the age of 21.
